Moving into halls is sure to be one of the highlights of your Nottingham Freshers experience but if it’s the first time you’ll be living away from home, it can also seem daunting.
Here are some ways you can make your student accommodation feel a little more like home during your time at NTU.
Most halls of residence come with standardised furniture and fittings, meaning they all look the same, so bringing some personality to your room will make all the difference. Bold bed sheets, cushions and blankets are all a great place to start. Once you have the basics sorted, think about accessorising with plants and other finishing touches that you associate with home. Cacti and succulents are low maintenance, affordable additions if you’re struggling with where to start.
Posters and prints can also add interest to your new room, just bear in mind that most accommodation providers charge for Blu Tack and other marks left on walls when you leave.
Bring home comforts
Finding new accessories is all well and good but it’s your home comforts that will really help. Is there a particular pillow you’re used to sleeping on at home? Bring it. The same goes for things like mugs, favourite foods and toiletries. Bringing all the things that you like to use at home will soon make your halls of residence feel like one.
Open your door
Home isn’t just about the things you put in it, it’s also the people who live there, so operate an open-door policy with your flatmates from day one. It doesn’t have to be permanent (we all need some time to ourselves every now and again) but be open to getting to know your fellow students if you want to feel at home in your halls.
